Peter M. Mellette, Esq.
Peter Mellette, Esq. is the founding firm partner and has represented numerous health care providers on many issues for 25 years.
For example, Mr. Mellette has represented over 150 successful Certificate of Public need applications for various hospitals, nursing facilities, and ancillary facilities. Mr. Mellette has also resolved licensure issues for both practitioners and facilities. He advises health care providers on regulatory issues in operations, transactions, state registrations, professional peer review and construction financing. He has been successful in winning or settling claims involving millions of dollars in Medicaid reimbursement in both federal and state courts, as well as administrative tribunals.
Mr. Mellette earned his bachelor’s degree in Policy Studies with a health care focus from Dartmouth College in 1980. He earned his Juris Doctorate from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond in 1985.
Mr. Mellette is a member of the American Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar, the American Health Lawyers Association, as well as an affiliate of numerous other professional associations. He is a frequent speaker on third party reimbursement, licensure, and other legal issues affecting nursing homes, hospitals, and other health care providers. Mr. Mellette is also a regular contributor of articles on legal issues relating to reimbursement, peer review, and long-term care.
Mr. Mellette is an active member of the community and participates in a variety of bar and community activities. These activities include serving as past president of the local hospice board and following in
the footsteps of his late father, a former clergyman and Senior Vice President with the National Conference of Christians & Jews, to lend his service as president of the Richmond Torch Club. He currently serves as chairman of the Literacy for Life Board at the Rita Welsh Center and is a member of the Virginia State Bar Client Protection Fund Board. His mother, a physician, was a pioneer in medical oncology treatment, a poet, and a key influence on Mr. Mellette’s career interest in health care law. He lives in Williamsburg with his wife, Kerry, a former health foundation director, and has two grown children.
